Mentoring

We want our interns to have the best possible experience during their internships so they will be the top hiring choices at their firms at the end of the summer. To assist this, students are allocated senior industry mentors to help guide them through their summer experiences and ensure they outperform their peers.

Integral to an intern’s success during the summer is the support network of mentors. Interns can speak with mentors about how to turn their internships into jobs, how to navigate through the industry, specific job challenges, career advice and personal questions.

Every SEO intern will be given a mentor who is a leader in the industry. Your mentor will work with you before and during the summer to provide you with guidance and support on how to maximise your chances of success.

Mentors will typically work in the same business area as you at a different firm and will therefore be completely independent and objective.

What are the benefits of mentoring?

• Mentors provide exposure to experienced professionals with broad knowledge and education about the industry
• Mentors serve as sounding boards to help mentees develop more mature perspectives about the summer internship
• Having a confidante with whom he/she can be completely honest helps the mentee to develop a sense of comfort and belonging, which is particularly important to keeping talented ethnic minorities and women in the industry
• Having someone to cheer for his/her success and help troubleshoot increases confidence and self-esteem
• Mentors are positive role models who are successful and who prioritise giving back
• Mentors may help create additional networking opportunities, through the mentors’ contacts and the mentoring team

Buddies

Every SEO intern will also meet with the SEO alumni from the previous year’s class who completed the same internship with the same firm and in the same business area. Your SEO buddy will help to ensure you are prepared specifically for the unique challenges of your particular placement (in terms of the work, people you will interact with, assessment process, etc.).
